When Henry 8th reformed the Catholic Church he had abbeys like Newstead knocked down. Whilst many were completely levelled, only the chapel was destroyed at Newstead meaning the building could be gifted to be a home to Byron’s ancestors
Byron inherited Newstead and its lands plus the Byron lordship where he became the 6th Baron Byron
Byron unexpectedly inherited Newstead at age 10 when his uncle left the Abbey and lordship to his young nephew after hearing of him having a lame leg, and knowing of Byron’s wayward and disreputable father known as ‘mad Jack’
Catherine Gordon, Byron’s mother had previously had Newstead rented whilst Byron was schooled at Harrow and then Cambridge University where he infamously kept a pet bear. He took over ownership of Newstead on his 21st Birthday
